“The goal to transform the St. Louis region into a national transportation hub is at odds with a dwindling local workforce and slow economic growth, according to federal economic data. But officials say funding from the U.S. Department of Labor to support new apprenticeship programs could help jump-start the region and get it closer to its goal.
St. Louis’ economic growth has trailed that of the U.S. for some time. From 2009 to 2015, the St. Louis economy saw annualized growth of 0.9 percent compared with the U.S. economy’s 1.9 percent increase. The difference is even greater compared with economic growth in other major metropolitan cities in the Midwest: Nashville rose 3.9 percent, Louisville 2.3 percent and Kansas City 1.4 percent over the same period, according to Kevin Kliesen of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis…”
